Prairie Point Pot Holder

A quick & useful gift!

Option 1                                     Option 2                                         Option 3

Option 1: Two fabrics (1 fat quarter each – will make more than one!)
Cut an 8” square from each fabric.
Cut 3 – 3”x12” strips from 1 fabric (for the prairie points border)
Cross cut strips into 12 – 3” squares.
Press 4 squares in half and in half again to make small squares.
Press 8 squares diagonally and in half diagonally again to make small triangles.
Pin a square into each corner of the contrasting fabric, matching raw edges.
Center 2 triangles on each side of the square and pin in place.
Machine baste around the square.
Layer from bottom up: 8” square of batting, potholder top face up, backing wrong side
up. Pin together.

Stitch around the square leaving a 4” opening in the center of one side. Clip
excess at corners. Turn and bring prairie points and corner squares to the
front. Press and machine stitch around the potholder ¼” from the edge. Quilt
lines across the square.

(Another look: pull the corner squares out only half way. Leave the prairie points and
corners extending beyond the edge of the potholder. Shown as Option 3.

Option 2: Three fabrics (1 fat quarter each will make more than one!)
Backing: cut 1 – 7 ½” square; cut 13”
x15” strip; cross cut into 5 3”
squares.
Contrast fabric: cut 1 – 3”x12” strip; cross cut into 4 3”
squares.
Prairie Point fabric: cut 3 – 3” x 12” strips; cross cut into 12 – 3” squares.
Sew remaining squares into a ninepatch
block for the front of the potholder.

Fold and press prairie point fabric into squares and triangles as in option 1.
Continue as in option 1. If you do not want to stitch around the edge of the
potholder, slip stitch the opening closed and tack down the point of each
prairie point and corner square with a few invisible stitches.
